Hi, Richard.

thanks for the reply. In A mode I can change the aperture. In S mode I can change the speed with command dial. Same for P mode. In M mode auto focus works good but light meter doesn't. All buttons work properly except the metering position - in every position in the view finder it shows matrix metering - that's why I think it doesn't work. When I try to take a picture outside I get over exposure and in the LCD I just see white screen. So I crank exposure compensation to -5 and I can make a somewhat good picture. The lens I use is AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 D. I tried another lense with the same results. I tried with 18-55 zoom lense . Both of the lenses work properly with Nikion D50. The LCD shuts down properly with battery just not when connected to the adapter. In manual mode it doesn't work properly. I need to use the things I know or a different light meter to set speed and exposure.

Hi, Ivan.

At least it is usable in Manual mode! In A mode, can you change the aperture with the command dial? In S mode, can you change the shutter speed with the command dial? In P mode, can you rotate the dial to change the value combinations at all? In M mode, does the light meter and auto-focus seem to be working properly? Does it behave any differently with other lenses? What aperture is the lens set to?

I'm wondering if the light meter is not working properly. Do other buttons seem to work properly? I haven't seen this problem before, but it sounds interesting. I wonder if the camera thinks one of the buttons is being held down, which might explain the LCD behavior, and perhaps other things.

Hi Richard,
I spent a lot of time findings things about D2H and I found your site. My D2H camera only shoots in manual mode. When I put it in a P- priority the camera gets stuck in 1/15 speed and F2, doesn't matter if I'm outside in a bright sunny day or inside a darkened room - it shows me the same. And it doesn't matter in what position I put the switch for the metering the camera stays just in matrix metering . If I put it in A-priority the camera is showing me speed 6 seconds and F2 and when I put it in S-priority it's showing me 1/16 F18, and this stays the same no matter what the light conditions are. The camera is with 50mm lense F1.8. I pressed the 2 green buttons to put the camera in the default config but this doesn't affect anything. Everything works good in a manual explosure, shooter counting is 53xxx. Another thing that doesn't work is the LCD display , which won't go off after the preset time. Firmware version is 2.02. Do you have an advice or any info on my problems.

Cheers

The nikon grips stretch like that, its not the cleaner (or certainly not the lighter fluid). Apparently the petroleum in the rubber starts to come out and make's it hard for adhesive to stick also.

Hi Richard

Just to let you know I have now cleaned the inside of the screen, yes the 4 screws removed the back, then 2 screws holding on the LCD cover plate. It wasn't necessary but I disconnected the small ribbon cable and then everything lifted out fine, gave me access to the rear of the glass which I wiped with high-fibre cloth. As you said the rubber grips slot back so I didnt need to do any reglueing, though I think doubled sided tape would have been the best and safest option.

Thanks again for this useful page and your advice.

Cheers

Hi Richard

Thanks for the info, I did manage to find all four screws under the rubbers, and yep the rubber went back in place just fine. I contacted Nikon about the glues, but they didnt give me any useful info other than to buy new grips! I have just invested in one of these silly cheapo pop up screens, so will see how I go with that in sunlight first. I have a battery grip rubber come off another Nikon so I may well try glues/ tapes on that first. Im sure Ill get round to doing the clean and of course will let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Hi, Jim.
I took another look at the teardown pics and I'm pretty sure you don't need to remove the battery compartment to open the back. On the grip side, the two screws closest to the rear are the ones holding the back on. Ditto on the "rewind" side where the connectors are. I have pics of both ends in the post for reference. The grip rubber kinda tucks in, so if you only peel it back enough to access the screws, you might not need any adhesive to restore it when you're done. The D2x could be slightly different in detail, but I doubt it varies much if at all.
As to grip glues... I'll admit I haven't glued the grips back on mine yet! I've been suggested to use a couple things, which you'll find in the comments here - one of which is called DuoBond (from the hardware store); another is thin 3M automotive adhesive tape (probably available at an automotive paint store). I think you'll want a rubberized adhesive like "Welder Adhesive by Homax", not something hard like epoxy or superglue. Let me know how it goes!
Cheers, Richard

Hi Richard - this time from sunny Toronto...
I just received a few emails with new comments
on your post, and realized that I didn't even thank

my D2X. Feeling very guilty about that -
someone who takes the time and effort to
answer a question you've got, and then I
don't have the decency to express my

So here I am seven months later to say "thank you very much" - I
appreciated receiving your answer back then, and am still grateful for your time and willingness to share your expertise!

PS - I don't know why the window is jumping all over theh place while I'm trying to type this, so I hope something legible comes of it!

Hi Richard

Many thanks for your reply, so two screws each side, under the grips, is all it will take to remove the back? no need to remove screws from the bottom cover? from your pic its look like there are 2 screws then holding the LCD in place? once removed Ill have access to the inside of the glass. Sounds like the best option, sorry a couple more questions, any recommendations on.... a) what I should clean the inside of the glass with? and..... b) if I do need to reglue the grips, is there a specific type of glue that is ideal? (I have read forums and seems there are lots of different opinions as to glues)

Thanks again for your help
